Callous And Corns
Skin is a wonderful organ and is the largest organ the human body
has. One of its more amazing features is its ability to protect and
regenerate itself. Protection of the internal structures from damage is
crucial. Callous and corns develop as a result of that mechanism of
protection. Callous forms as a result of pressure and the skins natural
defence to pressure and friction over a diffuse area is to thicken up. The
down side to this is that it is not self limiting, it just keeps getting
thicker. As the callous thickens it gets harder and starts to hurt and
makes everything uncomfortable. Corns work in exactly the same way
except that the pressure is over a small area and instead of spreading
out over the area the corn grows into the skin and feels very much like
strapping a stone to your foot and walking around on it. Also the corn
can grow so deep that it will cause skin breakdown and ulceration.
Professional Podiatric attention and correct footwear will help manage
the problems and keep you on your feet.
